Posing

I've never actually had a real relationship with God. I feel like I'm just a poser and a blasphemer. I'm not growing up in a Christian family, and I don't go to church, but I do go to a Christian school. Any help?

Do you want it?
by: Anonymous

Hey Alea,
I have a question to ask you. Do you want a real relationship with God? If so, why? Why is it important to you?

I understand that it must be hard to keep the faith when your living environment doesn't really support you, but it has been done before and you can do it too. If you truly desire to love God with all of your heart and you want to follow Him, there are many ways you can promote your spiritual growth... and eventually affect your family too! I'd love to continue communicating with you here, but I just want to find out your response first before I go into it all. I hope you're doing well:)

I've been wanting this for awhile, seeing all the people in my school having this awesome relationship with God, but I'm just too timid to ask one of my teachers for help. But i would really like to know more.

Me again:)

Alea,

I'm really glad to hear that you can see what a relationship with God looks like in your peers and that it causes you to desire Him even more. That's a great sign that God is working in their lives and that He's stirring a hunger inside of you as well.

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled." Matthew 5:6

I don't want to reduce our relationship with God into a step-by-step program, but I believe the desire/hunger you have for God is a very good place to begin. Something I'm going to pray for you, and I would encourage you to pray for yourself, is that God would fill you with His Spirit. His Spirit is the key ingredient to changing the very nature of who we are. Sometimes even though we're trying to be good Christians, we constantly find ourselves doing what we know we shouldn't be doing (I know I do...the flesh can be a beast sometimes), but if we have the Spirit living inside of us and guiding us, and we're willing to submit to Him, He is able to create a clean heart within us.

If you're trying to be a good person and change things on your own strength, you probably won't get too far. The only way to truly see a change in your life is to submit yourself to His lordship and allow Him to lead you through life. A lot of times that means that we have to pick up our cross and kill the flesh (those naturally wicked desires we're so prone to) if we really want to follow Christ.

I feel like I got off track there for a minute, but okay... Ask the Lord to fill you with His Spirit and then start taking some steps to position yourself to receive Him. What I mean by that is, you can't ask Him to lead you but not actually listen when He speaks! Once you've chosen to submit your life to Him, you have to sit at His feet and learn from Him (through reading the Bible and talking to Him on a regular basis). It is during those times that your relationship with Him will develop. A relationship with God develops just like a relationship with any other person. The more time you spend with Him, the better you know Him. I challenge you to not only commit your life to Him, but commit some of your time every day.

This is getting long, but I also want to say that if your teacher is someone you trust, you should talk to her. The best thing a teenager can have is an older Christian to offer support, advice and whatnot. Try what I've suggested and let me know if you see any difference, okay?

Love,
A Sister in Christ
