Decided on boy shorts, what does everyone think?

by Cindy Lopez

I was looking for a bikini for my daughter (she's 15), but came across your website looking for modest bikini. I didn't think much about the modesty issue -- it's what she keeps saying she wants for the summer, and all her friends are wearing them, she makes good grades, etc.

I decided instead of the stringy-bikini type, we'd compromise and go with the boy shorts kind. What do you guys think? Here's a photo from the store's site.

I don't think so
by: Lisa Frank

I think you need to rethink your purchase -- those "boy shorts" look more like the kind that the cheeks fall out. Do you really want your daughter parading around like this for all the boys to gawk at on the beach?? Do you really want to buy from a company that puts girls in suggestive poses like this? This girl is showing WAY too much of her crotch for my comfort. These "boy shorts" are just marketing -- if everything is hanging out, they are no better than a string bikini in my opinion.

i agree with lisa

i agree with what lisa said. that girl is showing WAY TOO MUCH. i'm only 21, and am concerned about modest swimwear..i found a modest tankini at kohls last year. the bottoms have a skirt and while the shirt and skirt weren't supposed to go together, they do..its possible to find much more modest swimmwear..what i've done in the past when i've gone over to friends houses, and didn't have my own bathing suit b/c i didn't know we were going swimming, is borrow one of my friend's and if it wasn't modest, i wore shirts and a t-shirt over it.

No way!

Personally I dont think these are much better than the stringy gimpy bikinis. It still shows WAY too much. I'm 15 and I know what teenagers want and what the boys are looking for. Yeah, she may be mad at you for not letting her wear that but but it's worth it. Every guy at the beach is going to be looking at her whether you think so or not. By letting your daughter wear that you're basically putting a sign on her that says "hey every guy out there come look at me." girls should be wearing a two piece AT LEAST!

Too much compromise?
by: Danielle

Hi!

I'm a newlywed (22yrs). When i was your daughters age, I didnt realize the importance of modesty. Now that I'm married, I have the highest respect for my husband. That has motivated my own quest for modesty.

Be careful of your choices. Your daughters reasoning sounds juvenile (ie. everyone else is doing it, etc.). She won't have any trouble "compromising" to a string bikini before long. Immodest swimwear is a slippery slope... especially for teens. If you get to the bottom of the issue, she probably wants to look sexy and attractive to the boys.

Is "being sexy" worth the compromise to make her fit it???

Hope that helps.

Update
by: Cindy Lopez

Well, we got this suit in the mail from Billabong, and my daughter tried it on and the family wanted to see how it looked. My oldest son's jaw dropped when she came out in the living room -- these "boy shorts" barely covered her back end. Plus, the top barely covered and kept wanting to ride up (she's large for her age). The thing fit as tight as a glove, leaving no room for imagination!

Thankfully, my husband flat out said "no!". So, we're off to Kohl's to find a tankini w/ skirt that fits in the dressing room first before we buy.

good plan

that sounds like a good plan

Thank you

I'm a 19 year old guy, and am faced everyday with girls who don't share my opinions on modesty, and having to face that with even the Christian girls that are my dear friends as close as family, it hurt my heart deeply.
Reading your story I was praying you listened to the comments as I read them, and reading your "updated" I was so releaved to hear of your choice, AND that your husband was so willing to stand strong and firm on the issue, sounds like a good man. :)
Thank you for listening to God's wisdom, from wherever it may have come that you received it from. It gave me hope.

Sexy Christians
by: Anonymous

I'm a 21 year old, and what is too much skin or not is based on pure preferences. The Bible never argues about not being sexy Christians. I know Romans talks also about not making someone stumble, but you also have to look realistically at it. If drinking beer causes someone else to stumble, don't do it around them. If listening to secular music makes someone else stumble, don't listen to it around them. But you will always ALWAYS find someone to argue that you are showing too much skin. Just food for thought.

seriously??
by: cassandra

so you seriously think its ok to wear something that makes you look sexy as long as it doesn't make someone else stumble?? guys are much different from girls. guys can just see a girl skimply dressed and lust after her, hard as he tries not to, its hard for him not to, just because of how his body is made, and its not fair to make him sin because of the way you want to look sexy. God also says that we are not to act like the world--when we try to dress sexy, we ARE acting like the world, and that's wrong. its like my youth pastor says--if you're going to go around acting like the world with the way you talk, dress, act, etc., then do other Christians and GOD a favor, and don't call yourself a Christian, because you're giving God a bad name, and is the reason why many non-Christians choose to not follow God. The following verses are all in the God's Word Translation.
*Leviticus 18:3-5 "You used to live in Egypt. Don't live the way the Egyptians do. I am bringing you to Canaan. Don't live the way the Canaanites do. Never live by their standards. Follow My rules, and live by My standards. I am the Lord your God. Live by My standards, and obey My rules. You will have life through them. I am the Lord.
Daniel 6:1-22 the summary is Daniel in the lion's den--Daniel's peers made it law that he only worship King Belshazzar. Daniel refused. He still prayed to his God. His peers, who were the king's advisors saw this and told the king, who was forced to throw Daniel into the lion's den. During this time, Daniel did nothing but pray and worship God. God sent an angel who closed the lion's mouth, and Daniel was saved. The next day, the king went to check on him, and was surprised. The king sent people to get Daniel out. After this, the king threw the advisors into the lion's den, and the lions had a feast. The king made a new law--that all should worship and pray only to Daniel's God.
*Romans 12:1-2 "Brothers and sisters, in view of all we have just shared about God's compassion, I encourage you to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, dedicated to God and pleaing to Him. Instead, change the way you think. Tne you will always be able to determiine what God really wants--what is good, pleasing, and perfect.

seriously?? part2

*1Timothy 1:18-19 "Timothy, my child, I'm giving you this order about the prophecies that are still coming to you: Use these prophesies in faith and with a clear conscience to fight this noble war. Some have refused to let their faith guide their conscience and their faith has been destroyed like a wrecked ship."
*1Timothy 6:11-12 "But you, man of God, must avoid these things. Pursue what God approves of: a godly life, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. Fight the good fight for the Christian faith. Take hold of everlasting life to which you were called and about which made a good testimony in front of many witnesses."
*James 1:2-5 "My brothers and sisters, be very happy when you are tested in different ways. You know that such testing of your faith produces endurance. Endure until you testing is over.f Then you will be mature and complete, and you won't need anything. If any of you needs wisdome to know what you shouuld do, you should ask God, and He will give it to you. God is generous to everyone and doesn't find fault with them."
*1Peter 3:16-17 "Keep your conscience clear. Then those who treat the good Christian life you live with contempt will feel ashamed that they have ridiculed you. After all, if it is God's will, it's better to suffer for doing good than doing wrong."
*Proverbs 7:1-5 "My son, pattention to my words. Treasure my commands that are within you. Obey my commands so that you may live. Follow my teachings just as you protect the pupil of your eye. Tie them on your fingers. Write them on the tablet of your heart. Say to wisdom, 'You are my sister.' Give the name 'my relative' to understanding in order to guard yourself from an adulterous woman, from a loose woman with her smooth talk."
*Matthew 5:27-30 "'You have heard that it was said, 'Never commit adultery.' But I can guarantee that whowever looks with lust at a woman has already committed adultery in his heart. So if your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose a part of your body than to have it thrown into Hell. And if your right hand leads you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose a part of your body than to have all of it go into Hell.'"
*Matthew 18:6-7"'These little ones believe in Me. It would be better for the person who causes one of them to lose faith to be drowned in the sea with a large stone hung around his neck. How horrible it will be for the world because it causes people to lose their faith. Situations that cause people to lose their faith will arise. How horrible it will be for the person who causes someone to lose his faith!'"

It is your choice in the end
by: Anonymous

No one can tell you that you are dishonorring God because this is between you and God. Personally, I think it is nice looking. It is much more modest than a string bikini. Teenhood is a time of self expression. It is good to compromise and be supportive. Even if your daughter were to wear a one piece or an old fashioned bathing dress that would not stop men from gawking.
