What to do about modest swimwear?

by ashlynn

I am having a problem with modest swimwear. I'm 13, and my parents don't reinforce the modesty concept. They teach us don't wear short shirts but not skirts, swimwear etc. But i feel like God is trying to tell me that i need to change the way i dress. I've started buying skirts, and i feel like this is what God wants me to do. my sister thinks that i'm doing it to act old fashioned, i try to tell her differently, but she says sure you keep dressing old fashioned. Now i feel like the next step is swimwear but i dont want to wear board shorts i would rather wear the modest swimwear from www.wholesomewear.com they have swimwear that goes to the knees. it's like a skirt but has sorta like leggings underneath. I want to get it but i've been questioning myself."What if i don't look good in it","What if my family thinks it's stupid","how do i bring it up that i want to buy it","what if people stare at me". I'm sorta confused.

You're Blessed!
by: S'ambrosia

Ashlynn,
When you choose to go against the grain of society and be different, of course people will stare at you and think you're weird! But I hope you realize why that's a good thing..

You're doing it for the LORD! Do you realize how pleased that makes His heart and that it's what He says that matters, not what people say? Do you know that the Lord honors those who honor Him?

Hon, it's not an easy road to choose modesty in a world that celebrates immodesty, but it is a blessed one. Remember that God is smiling down on you as you choose to respond to what He has been pressing on your heart about modesty. That's really all that matters, and you have support through others on this website and in the Body, so you're not alone:)

Me too

Dear Ashlynn,

It is such a blessing to hear your story! The reason is, I am in almost the exact position you are in. I am 15 years old, and I feel convicted by God to wear long skirts along with modest swimwear. I wear a swimsuit from wholesomewear and would encourage you to do the same if you are convicted. I am the only one in my family who is convicted of these things. As for the best way to aproach your parents just be honest and tell them how you feel.

I'll tell you, wearing these swimsuits may not be easy. You may feel self-conscious. You may get strange look from people. You amy even wish you could just be normal. Hang in there. When you are discouraged remember you are doing it to please the LORD.

I'll be praying for you!

Love,
Ruth

Other Options

Wholesome Wear can be a great option, but there are other options available too. I've struggled with which option to choose because I'd like to be fashionable AND modest. Wholesome Wear is not my top choice.

If you would be more comfortable in a swimdress or a skirted tankini, do that. There are alot of fashionable, more widely accepted swimwear styles. If you really feel convicted in the depths of your heart to wear wholesomewear for swimming, follow your convictions.

same problem

Im having the same problem but I truely think we should do what we are being convicted to do and stay strong. It will be hard but i know it can be done.

Thank you

Wow, Thank you so much for your post. I am 15 and felt like God was telling me to wear skirts. I have been doing so for the last 2 months but my mom thinks what I am doing is stupid. She does not understand that this is what I feel I should do. I searched the Internet for ideas on modest swimwear and found many nice modest bathing suits(I can't afford any of them). I just wanted you to know that it is a blessing hearing people that have gone through the same thing.

You're awesome! :)

I'm also looking into that swimsuit cause it is VERY modest and like you, my family also doesn't see it the same way I do. So what I do is just tell em the Bible verses (1 Timothy 2:9 and 1 Peter 3:3-4) that tell us how we are to dress modestly. They may make fun of you and laugh at you but don't pay attention. We are here to serve God, not this world. I do not know you but I am very very very proud of you!! It is so nice to see such a young girl taking a stand for the Lord. Keep doing what you KNOW IS RIGHT and don't listen to the ones who want to bring you down. Find your strength in the Lord and follow Him and Him only!! God Bless you!!!

Your Not Alone

Don't worry, I'm going through almost the same thing. I like to be modest and wear long skirts and not-too-short shirts too, but my mom doesn't have the same opinion with me about modest swimsuits. So, maybe you can get a wet suit with knee-length pants. That way, you can stay modest and won't have to worry about what people will think. I think your opinion about modesty is great and I definitely support it!

I also really like Wholesome Wear too! All of the girls in the TLC show, 19 Kids and Counting wear Wholesome Wear!
