Self Esteem Verses and Forgiveness

Hi Shelley I think its sooooo great you have this site! It just makes me so happy and thankful because this is exactly what I needed and God knew that.

I struggle with very low self esteem and I was wondering if you know any verses to help me with it!

And also, you wrote that God did forgive you for making some bad sexual choices, and my question is, how do you know you have been forgiven? I always pray for forgiveness for my sins but how can I be sure I am forgiven?

Please help!

Forgiveness is offered to you...will you take it?
by: Shelley

I want you to know right now that forgiveness is offered to you by Jesus when you come to him with a sincere heart.

I John 1:9 (NIV) says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

Notice it says ALL unrighteousness. That means sexual sins too.

Psalm 102:11-12 (NLT) says, "For his unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth. He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west."

Isaiah 1:18 (NIV) says, "'Come now, let us reason together,' says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool."

Our enemy, Satan, wants to keep us from truly believing we're forgiven. So, more than anything, I want you to hear this truth...God forgives you!

Forgiving Yourself

But, don't forget to forgive yourself for the mistakes you've made. Often, for me, the hardest person to forgive is myself. And so many times I've lived in regret instead of joy because I "couldn't believe how stupid I was" or "I should have known better" etc.

True Guilt and False Guilt

See, I believe there is true guilt and false guilt. True guilt says, "I've done something wrong" and will lead to a change in our behavior. We'll be convicted and want to repent and start doing things differently. "Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death." 2 Corinthians 7:10

However, false guilt, which can also be called shame, says, "I'm a bad person." Shame is a form of self hatred and can lead to low self esteem and depression.

Do you see the difference?

Our enemy would want nothing more than to keep you bound up in shame, thinking that you are a bad person for the things you've done. Don't choose to get stuck in that kind of thinking! Choose to believe God's word that says He has forgiven you and wiped your slate clean. Meditate on those truths and also choose to forgive yourself.
