Parents

How do i deal with say like both of my parents work for the Police/Fire Department one works day shift and one works midnight shift to where i bearly see them. AND i am homeschooled so thats even better! :/ not.... I feel like my parents never have any time for me. because whenever we are all together its always talking about work! :( They never ask me anymore how my day went. How do i deal with this?

Parent Night

Dear Carli,

First, I think it's great that you want to spend time with your parents!!

As parents, we tend to get caught up in the day-to-day stresses of providing for our children. We love you so much, that we want to give you everything that we didn't have growing up.

However, what we sometimes forget is that the most important gift we can give our children is our time.

If I may suggest that when you are all together after a long day, give each member of the family a certain amount of time (10 min), to discuss their day at school or work. After each member is finished, then the rule is that they are not allowed to discuss work or school for the rest of the evening.

Also, maybe you and your parents can have a date night to either go out together, or stay in and watch a movie or play a board game (Monopoly).

Carli, the key is communication. If you express how you feel to your parents, and it is heartfelt, they will listen.

Be persistent, when your parents realize how important this issue is to you, and how much you miss them, I guarantee that they really miss you too.
