Monster On My Wall

by Amanda Bruner
(Pomona, CA)

It's the first thing I see before I start my day

It screams and calls and taunts me from the bed in which I lay
It's seen my beauty shine and it's seen my body fall
It's the one and only; the monster on my wall
My reflection can be wondrous but it loves to criticize
Constantly yelling, "Don't eat today! Instead go exercise!"
It tells me lies and things untrue
They started small but eventually grew
It's seen me cry for mercy and seen me forced to crawl
It has no guilt or sympathy; the monster on my wall

Now I've learned about the monster; it has a partner in my head
They work together telling me,
"If you're not perfect, you're better off dead."
I've learned they're just illusions
I can turn them off at will
But if I let them cling to me, they will surely kill
My angels help me fight the monster, scaring it away
Finally I'm strong again and no longer its prey
I still hangs around me hoping I will fall
But I'm fighting everyday, the monster on my wall
I know it will lose even after giving all it's got
It won't win, it won't reign
In the long run it will fall
In the end it will serve its rightful purpose
No longer a monster
But good friend on my wall
