Is Myspace really all that wrong.

by Grace

Before I start I just wanted to say that I heard you speak at the leadership conference today and you were fantastic. Well I have a myspace and I love it. I love being able to talk to all my friends and everything. I demonstrate all the safety precautions and dont do it for anything that I shouldnt. All the people from my school say that its really wrong. Im really confused. Thanks for everything :)

Is MySpace the problem...
by: Shelley

Grace,
Thanks for contacting me! I'm glad you enjoyed the conference today...it was an honor to be with you guys.

It sounds like you're confused on whether or not it's okay to have a MySpace.

First of all, I assume you've talked to your parents and have their permission to have a MySpace account.

Secondly, I assume you already have safety and privacy precautions set in place. This is extremely important to avoid contact with any online predators and such.

Next, I assume you are filtering the content that you take in as far as what pages you view, what videos you watch, etc. Like CJ mentioned today, "Garbage in, Garbage out." That is true for anything on the internet.

Saying all of that, one of the biggest issues I see right now with online social networking like Myspace and Facebook is the time is takes. I have to admit that I gave in and now use Facebook fairly often. It's been awesome to re-connect with friends from high school and college that I haven't seen in ages, but I know from personal experience how easy it is to spend more time on it than I intend. And I've had to make deliberate efforts to avoid wasting time on it.

As Christians, I think it's important to invest our time, just like our money, into things that will last. So, I would ask you....how are you spending your time on Myspace. And how much time are you spending on Myspace? I encourage you to pray and ask God how He wants you to spend your time.

I want to share this video with you that really convicts me everytime I see it. It's in regards to our time. I'm not sharing this with you to make you feel guilty, but only to make you think about what you're investing your time into. Are you investing your time into things that will last?

Shelley

It's okay

I've had a Myspace account and as long as you are careful and don't add people you don't know and keep your privacy settings on Private, then you should be fine.
However, the huge Myspace rage is about over (at least in my town.)
I used Myspace back when it was really popular and I never ran across anything bad.
Make sure that Myspace doesn't come before God though or else you have a problem.
