Contemplations of a Teenage Girl

by Mallory
(Petoskey, Michigan)

Look in the mirror,

And tell me if it is true,
That the only reflection staring back,
Is nobody other than you.

It’s not your sister or friend,
Or the girls that you wish you were.
You were created you,
So why would you want to be any other?

We wish that some things were different,
Like our bodies, hair, or eyes;
We want to change these things about ourselves,
And it’s because we have bought into all the lies.

We cannot deny that Satan feeds us,
With stuff we shouldn’t believe.
So while we dream of being someone else,
We forget who God has called us to be.

He hasn’t called us to be number one,
Or even the next Superman.
He doesn’t say to be perfect,
He’s only asked you do the best you can.

He only wants you to try,
And do the best you can do.
It doesn’t matter if you fail,
To Him you will always have the same value.

While in this world, we will not fully understand.
But we must not be excusing,
For it says, “Man does not comprehend its worth;
It cannot be found in the land of the living.”*

At what else is said,
You may also be amazed.
Some wise words say “Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting;
But a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.”**

So take comfort in those words,
The LORD your God inspired some to write.
Ask Him to give you confidence,
For you are lovely in His sight.

*Job 28:13, **Proverbs 31:30; April 15, 2011
