Barbie

Hi,

I am a dad and a teacher.

The other day my 3 year old I were in KMart, a large Australian retailer and we happened to walk down the aisle and she stopped in front of barbie and asked if she could have one.

I was perplexed that a three year old girl would even know what a barbie was.

I lent down and said no. Barbie is not a real representation of what a women should be...she looked at me puzzled and said ..okay.

I deplore Barbie.

cheers.

Excellent Job Dad! Keep explaining to your children what is really important in life. It is so crucial to have honest and healthy role models for young children who are so easily swayed.

They are just dolls

They are just toys and there is nothing wrong with playing with them.

You really should buy her one. Why are you so concerned about the "imaginary impact" of Barbie that you are creating yourself. Your child will play with Barbie until she gets tired of her, and she will throw her away. BELIEVE ME. If you don't want your chlild to think of Barbie's body image, stop telling her that it's not the right doll b/c this way you are making your daughter realize that Barbie is a special doll. Just buy her one and let her treat this doll as any other one.

good and bad

barbie can keep your kid occupied but in the long run, that was a good decision because she could do worse things when she gets older

Take a Step Back

Dear Conflicting Father,

I agree completely that Barbie creates an unrealistic idea for body image, but Barbie is a factor that plays into a young girls life. By telling your daughter she is too young to play with Barbies, you are basically telling her to grow up. In my opinion and remember it's my opinion, you should allow your daughter to have a Barbie. If problems of body issues come up, use Barbie as a learning tool not a punishment.
